Students wove a variety of materials (string, yarn, ribbon, fabric strips, paper strips from magazines) across a homemade loom to create a multi-dimensional piece.
Using construction paper cut in a frame, I premade the looms with pipecleaners and card stock using staples. They seemed to work fine and if the kids pulled too hard, they could just restaple the warp in place. We talked about warp and weft. What makes a fiber strong? How can we vary the weaving to create depth of texture and color? After they wove all the materials (a lesson on over-under with diagram on the board helped), students trimmed off the long fibers ("give your artwork a haircut"), cut a heart out of cardstock and stapled it on top of the weaving, like a frame.
