Foam plate printing

A visiting artist, Emily Fox King, taught our class how to do styrofoam prints.

After explaining some of the technical terms and showing examples of prints, students sketched a simple line drawing for practice. Students then used a ballpoint pen or soft pencil to draw their design on a piece of craft foam. Some students learned the hard way to write any words backwards, since they print in reverse. The adults inked the foam with brayers and water-based printing ink squirted on pieces of glass (from thrifted picture frames), in their choice of color, then placed the foam on top of a piece of sulphite paper and rubbed with their hands to make the print. Carefully pulling the foam off was their favorite part! After letting the prints dry, they were mounted on a colorful square of paper and displayed in the classroom.
